The canyon opened into a valley, and the valley held a city. Its towers rose so high they pierced the clouds, their surfaces covered in glowing vines. Elara walked through streets wide enough for mountains, her footsteps silent on the stone.

"Command, this is Vance. I've found a city. It's... immense."

"Copy, Odyssey. Are there inhabitants?"

Elara looked up. A giant was sitting on a terrace, weaving a tapestry from threads of light. Its fingers moved slowly, each motion creating patterns that shimmered in the air.

"Hello," Elara called.

The giant looked down. Its face was ancient, kind, and patient.

"You are the small one," it said. "The Guardian told us you would come."

Elara bowed. "I am Elara Vance. I come from Earth."

"We know of Earth," the giant said. "We planted its first seed."

Elara's eyes widened. "You created Earth?"

"We created many worlds. Earth was one of our experiments. We are pleased with how it has grown."

Elara felt dizzy. Everything she had known, everything she had believed, was shifting.

"We have much to show you," the giant said. "But first, you must rest."

It gestured to a leaf that had fallen from a nearby tree. The leaf was larger than Elara's ship, soft and warm. She lay down, and the leaf wrapped around her like a blanket.

She slept for hours, dreaming of stars being planted like seeds, of galaxies growing like gardens.

When she woke, the giant was waiting.

"Are you ready to learn?" it asked.

Elara nodded. "I'm ready."

She had come to Gigantia as an explorer. She was leaving as a student. The universe was vaster than she had ever imagined. And she was eager to discover its secrets. The giants were not just teachers-they were creators. And they had chosen her to carry their knowledge home. She would not fail them.

The tarmac was cold, the morning gray. Captain Elena Vasquez stood beside her F-35, her flight suit zipped, her helmet under her arm. Across the runway, her husband waited by the chain-link fence, his hands in his pockets, his face a mask she knew too well.

She walked toward him, her boots loud on the concrete. Six months. That was the deployment. Six months of silence, of waiting, of wondering if the phone would ring with news she didn't want to hear.

"I'll write," she said. "Every week."

He nodded. "I'll be here."

She touched his face, felt the warmth of his skin, the stubble she'd known for ten years. "You always are."

His arms went around her, tight, holding her like he'd never let go. She buried her face in his shoulder, breathed him in, memorized the way he felt.

"Come back," he whispered. "That's all I ask. Just come back."

She pulled away, looked at his face, the face she'd woken up to for a decade. "I will. I promise."

She walked back toward her jet, her boots heavy, her heart heavier. At the ladder, she turned. He was still there, still watching, still waiting.

She saluted. He returned it, crisp and perfect.

Then she climbed into the cockpit, strapped in, closed the canopy. The engine roared, the ground fell away, and she was in the sky, leaving him behind.

Below, he stood at the fence, watching her disappear into the clouds, his hand raised in a wave she couldn't see.

Six months. It felt like forever. But she had made a promise.

And somewhere in the sky, a pilot carried her husband with her, tucked into the pocket over her heart, close and safe, until she could come home.
